Trying to Compete with a Shoebox
The idea for creating a medication management platform came to me in front of a shoebox. My grandfather used to take a lot of medications, and he would organise them inside a shoebox. He had his own management system that was inefficient and often dangerous to his health. That's when I thought there had to be a better way to manage medication. That's when I realised I had to compete with a shoebox (Alafakis Ioannis co-founder maMEDS)
Two Parallel Worlds with a Shared Vision
The issue became even more pressing during the COVID-19 pandemic when the healthcare system was pushed to its limits. The crisis highlighted the urgent need for better patient care services, remote monitoring, and innovative medication management solutions.
Through ENABLE, a European COST Action that tracks pharmaceutical adherence technologies, it became evident that despite technological advancements worldwide, Greece lacked similar innovations. In this context, two people from different corners of the world - Dr. Theodosia Charitou, a researcher, bioinformatician, and technology assessment representative at ENABLE, and Ioannis Alafakis, an entrepreneur and pharmacist – shared the same vision: to create a technology tailored to Greek culture and reality.
This vision led to the creation of maMEDS, the first Greek company exclusively dedicated to medication management and adherence. maMEDS aims not only to develop innovative solutions but also to educate all stakeholders – from patients and caregivers to pharmacists and healthcare professionals – offering a holistic approach to healthcare.
